Incredible scenes in Hackney Central and Lower Clapton. It wasn’t just the looters that scared me, but the comments of the locals towards the police and the bystanders who were being aggressive towards me for carrying a camera. I unintentionally found myself in the middle of it, trapped between a police van and the looters who were throwing wine bottles / molotov cocktails at the police vans. Really violent, really scary.

One guy had been mugged for his phone, another for his camera and phone. These kids were indiscriminate and on a mission to steal and cause harm for personal gain. I just can’t understand where these people came from, they must have been around all the time, just waiting for the trigger. It was like something out of grand theft auto…

Tuesday 9th August 2011

I went out today to help clean up, but to be honest there wasn’t a lot to do – so many people turned out to help. What I noticed though was that businesses were boarding up their windows that hadn’t been smashed in anticipation of further attacks to come. There are definitely still gangs on the streets and I heard rumours that gangs were growing in London fields in preparation for tonight.

I spoke to one of the street cleaners on Goulton Rd, that I went back to today after last night’s mounted police turned up, the only evidence being the scars on the street where a van and a car had been set on fire. I can help but feel this is local gangs attacking local businesses. This is a sad time.

One of the upsides of having 5 suitcases of fancy dress in your flat is that people are more likely to come back to the flat after. The downside is clearing it all up afterwards. Not sure whether it made things better or worse. Damn the lifestyle is good out there – the weather was 28-30 degrees but strangely not too hot, mostly due to a fresh breeze. Friday Viks and I went into Florence and explored. Found this crazy Cemetery with the most ornate head stones and Mausoleum’s I’ve ever seen. A beautiful way to celebrate the afterlife. The rest of the time we were either somewhere Near Piazza Santa Spirito be it day or night. Not sure entirely why. Florence has an odd approach to social life – it’s a lot more discreet than London that’s for sure. To say it’s more sophisticated is an understatement.

For Paolo’s birthday we met up with his friends and work colleagues and went for a few drinks and after a lazy day in the sunshine around the pool the next day, we caught the train back to Pisa to catch the plane.
